SMADE responds to a growing social challenge: while digital technologies increasingly shape everyday life, many adults are being left behind. Rapid digitalisation, the spread of online misinformation, and the growing use of AI-driven systems have created new barriers for adults with fewer opportunities, particularly those with low digital skills, limited access to support, or low confidence in navigating digital environments.
Needs identified across partner contexts show that many adults struggle not only with basic digital competences, but also with critical thinking, media literacy, and understanding how digital systems affect information, employment, and civic participation. At the same time, th project develops community-based support roles such, the Digital Navigators, who will receive structured guidance, recognition, and tailored tools to effectively support vulnerable learners. Existing adult education offers tend to focus on technical skills alone, leaving important social, critical, and inclusion-related gaps unaddressed.
SMADE addresses these gaps by promoting a human-centred and inclusive approach to digital education. The project aims to empower adults to engage with digital environments safely, critically, and confidently, while strengthening their autonomy, resilience, and participation in an increasingly digital society.
The project’s objectives are to enhance essential digital and media literacy competences, strengthen critical awareness of digital risks and opportunities, and support Digital Navigators, adult educators, and organisations in delivering accessible and inclusive learning pathways. Through this approach, SMADE seeks to reduce digital exclusion and contribute to more equitable social, professional, and civic participation.
The primary target groups are adults with fewer opportunities, including low-skilled adults, older learners, unemployed or economically inactive individuals, and adults facing social or digital exclusion. Secondary target groups include Digital Navigators, adult educators, trainers, and organisations working in adult education and community learning, who will benefit from strengthened capacities and transferable practices.
